Remembering the Frontier Wars
Committing ourselves to the Uluru Statement of the Heart

26 January 2020, meet at 12:30am, Deloraine Community House, Tasmania

The Uluru Statement of the Heart, alongside calling for Treaty/ies and a voice in parliament, invites us to tell the truth about Australia’s history. This January 26th join Quakers and other interested citizens from North-West Tasmania, as we visit seven massacre sites around Deloraine and (re)commit ourselves to change. These frontier killings took place between 1826 and 1830, during a period known as the Black War.

We will visit the following massacre sites:*
Dairy Plains, Meander River (15 September 1826) (estimated 11 Palawa killed. 0 colonists killed)
Dairy Plains, Meander River (12 January 1827) (8 Palawa killed. 0 colonists killed)
Dairy Plains, Meander River (12 January 1827) (estimated 19 Palawa killed. 0 colonists killed)
Dairy Plains, Meander River (13 June 1827) (9 Palawa killed. 0 colonists killed)
Liffey Falls (24 June 1827) (estimated 75 Palawa killed. 1 colonist killed.) Quamby Brook (26 June 1827) (30 Palawa killed, 3 colonists killed) Whitefoord Hills, Meander River (18 April 1830) (6 Palawa killed. 0 colonists killed)

At each site we will read an historical account of what happened, create a small cairn of mourning, and gather in silence. At the end of the day we will return to Deloraine to read the Uluru Statement of the Heart, share the impact of the day, and commit ourselves anew to a journey of justice, restoring right relations and healing.
